Home Up

During a trip to Peloponissos the weekend of 20 - 21 September 2003 at the Port Palouki near the ancient Olympia (where the Olympic Games began) I spotted another Mirage 28 named Ilis (Ήλις in Greek). I had to search to understand what Ilis meant but finaly it prooved to be the name of an ancient city near the ancient Olympia. The people of Ilis where responsible for the organizing and fair play of the ancient Olympic Games. So I suppose that the owner of Ilis who I have not had the chance to meet during my short stay in Port Palouki is either from that area or very knowledgeable of the history of the Olympic Games.

I didn't quite understand that this boat was a Mirage 28 until I came very close since the owner of Ilis has changed the original side ports. Also I have not seen before such design of the hull lines as these red lines.

The boat appeared to be well maintained especially if one thinks that most of Mirages in Greece are ex-charter boats.

Inside the cockpit the engine remote controls are on the port side (opposite of Efaki where they are located on the starboard side). No other significant difference between Efaki and Ilis was observed.

Quite interesting to see was the platform at the stern. I have seen that in another boat in Athens and for some time I was thinking myself of installing one. The possitive thing about this platform is that provides space for easy jumping on the water (something quite often in Greece during summer), can be used for showers instead of the cockpit and provides some extension to the stern with this built in passarelle from the dock thus providing added security for the rudder. On the other hand there are some negative points too: it adds weight on the stern that already has most of the weights nearby, and it might make akward tiying on the dock. I have not make up my mind If I am going to install one on Efaki. I would like to discuss some details with some owners that have this platform installed. If you are one of them please get in touch here.
